Taika Waititi + Rhys Darby | Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Behind The Scenes
(via blackbeardsemophase)
Why Ed jumping in front of Stede is so important to understand who Ed and Stede truely are
From season 1 onwards a recurrencing theme is: “Who am I and who I want to be.” For Stede we have a strong shift from: “I am an aristocrat, but I want to be the Gentleman pirate, who kills with kindess” to :“I want to be a badass pirate.” And Ed who is a badass pirate and wants to be a fisherman.
This is why they fail to build a stable relationship with eachother, because they constantly try to be someone else, prentending to be someone they are not
But in the moment of danger they show their real selves.
They hear and see the attack and Eds first instinct is to grab Stede and cover Stede with his whole body, because he is the one with the most experience. Meanwhile Stede is still panicking, looking around.
You see it really clear in their different expressions. A+ acting choices here btw
Then Ed is making sure that Stede keeps his head low. Still looking out for the danger, trying to bring him to a safe place. We hear Stede screaming to his crew: “Take cover!” Which shows again that Stede is the caring one, who always looks out for his crew, who loves his crew deeply.
When Ed finally locates the danger he makes sure to put himself between Stede and the danger.
He steps in front and confronts Ned with a cool quote, still making sure he is between Stede and danger.
Meaning: During danger there was no time to pretend to be someone else. They acted purley based on insticts. The danger revealed their real selves.
And this scene showed that in the end Ed will always be the tough one, the strong one. And i think it will be his journey to learn to accept that. Because he can be gentle and caring and still be the one who steps in front. He doesn’t have to be a peace loving fisherman to make other people feel loved and protected and safe around him. They already feel all those things, because Ed is a person who does everything to make sure the people he loves are safe. While trying to figure who he is he tends to change from one extrem position to the next. Imo his season 3 arc will about him learning that he can be both, a pirate and a fisherman. That you do not have to reduce yourself to one thing.
Same goes for Stede. He tries to be all cool, gets drunk and gets an earring and dreams about killing Izzy in cold blood, but in the moment of danger, he panics, freezes, but he also looks out for his crew. So the same things I said about Ed, also applies for Stede. He also has to learn that he can be a pirate, while still being gentle, and incompetent and screamy.
TL.DR: They will both learn to take the best of both worlds, and meet each other in the middle and finally be happy with themselves and with each other
You put it more beautiful then I ever could
@kajaono ❤️❤️ your post is so beautiful though!!

the best thing about tumblr is that you can watch a show and then you come here and someone has made a gifset of it and you can put it on your blog like a sticker in a journal

I may just be neck deep in hiatus brain but you know what I just noticed about the framing of this shot?
Yeah
We’re whim-prone, as you said.
